Automated blogs powered by Yahoo Answers

Jul 6th, 2010

I randomly came across a blog today and I was going to submit a reply, but I was unable to as I did not have an account. There was no way to create an account either, yet there were 4 comments from 4 different people. Sure, there could be 4 members and they all commented but I had my doubts, so I had a closer look at the website.

It seemed to be a website about traveling/hotels/vacations what what really got me wondering is why every post title was a question, every post was short and expanded on the question, and every reply was a answer to the question. Sure it could be a real blog like that, but what kind of blog would only post questions? A few minutes of searching let me work out exactly what’s going on.

Every single blog post is copied from Yahoo Answers! Every comment was a answer to a question. If you ask a question on Yahoo answers with certain keywords (looks like hotel, vacation and travel are the keywords used), then your question will be copied to the blog. rel=nofollow is added to all links posted so you can’t exploit this to increase your page rank but the links may bring you some new visitors (although I doubt it).

After working this out the first thing that came to mind was “surly this is against the Yahoo Answers TOS”, so i had a quick look through the TOS and look what I found:

You agree not to reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, trade, resell or exploit for any commercial purposes, any portion or use of, or access to, the Yahoo! Services (including Content, advertisements, Software and your Yahoo! ID).

If anyone is wondering, the website is (I will not make that a link as it does not deserve to be linked to) and while I was looking into it I also found (same thing but this is about finance, looks like a different owner too).

I wonder how many blogs like this are out there.

Did you really spend a few hours writing this post?

I mean sure, some fella has found a way (Quite an ingenious way) of exploiting Yahoo Answers. Does it really warrant a mammoth post? Not really!

I will give you the fact that journeysites place is pretty rank though! All seems fairly automated!

I was recommended this web site by my cousin. I’m not sure whether
this post is written by him as no one else know such detailed
about my difficulty. You are wonderful! Thanks!

Hello! I understand this is kind of off-topic but I needed to ask.
Does operating a well-established website like yours require
a large amount of work? I’m brand new to blogging but I do write
in my journal daily. I’d like to start a blog so I can easily share my experience and feelings online.
Please let me know if you have any kind of ideas or tips for brand new aspiring bloggers.

I absolutely love your blog and find nearly all of your post’s
to be precisely what I’m looking for. can you offer guest writers to write content for you?
I wouldn’t mind writing a post or elaborating on a few of the subjects you write about here.

    Again, awesome web site!
